Terminating Sessions SOP

Purpose: To establish a standard operating procedure around terminating sessions so that that Nourish dietitians are protected and providers and patients are aligned on session termination cause.

Procedure:

  • While it is critical that Nourish dietitians are there to support patients, there are certain situations where it is acceptable to end sessions early. Some examples:

    • A client is engaging in any behavior that is not respectful or appropriate toward the provider.

    • Any session where you are not feeling safe.

  • To end a session early:

    • Firmly state the reason you are ending the session to your patient

    • Make a comment in the “Patient Update” section of your note if it is already created noting that the appointment was ended early.

    • Add a note to the Appointment Notes for the session by clicking “edit” in the calendar view. Add what happened in the session and the reason it was ended early.

    • Reach out to the patient regarding their next appointment, stating specific guidelines that need to be followed in that next appointment in order to continue doing sessions, and informing them of the charge for the previous appointment.
