Your Texas license may be approved in just a few days. Or, if you hold licensure in multiple states, it may take up to two weeks.

Approval is first posted on the TDLR site without notification. Check your status every few days after applying to monitor for approval.

If your license has not been approved within two weeks, contact TDLR at 512-463-6599 for a status update.

Initial Licensing Requirements

If you hold a current dietitian registration issued by the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR), then you have already met the educational, experience, and examination requirements needed to apply for a Texas dietitian license.

Application and Fees

To apply for a new license, submit a completed application (apply online or apply by mail) along with the fee of $108.

You must also submit with your application:

A dietitian license is valid for two years after the date of issuance and may be renewed biennially.

Dietitians Exam Information

  • The examination accepted for licensure in Texas is the Registration Examination for Dietitians, offered by the Commission on Dietetic Registration.

  • You will be responsible for paying the examination fee as directed by CDR.

Texas Jurisprudence Exam

  • Exact reference materials are provided within the exam, so completing this step is straightforward. No prior preparation is necessary.

  • The Texas Dietitian Jurisprudence Examination content is based on the state and federal laws, rules, and regulations relating to the practice of Licensed Dietitians.

  • You must provide documentation showing a passing score on the exam when you apply for a new license.

  • You will be responsible for paying the jurisprudence examination fee.

    • Currently $34

Please note that your jurisprudence exam must be completed within 30 days after paying the jurisprudence exam registration fee. After 30 days, your fee and registration will expire and your exam will be invalidated. To take the jurisprudence exam again, you will need to re-register and pay a new fee.

Human Trafficking Prevention Training for Health Care Practitioners

TX requires certain health care practitioners who provide direct patient care to complete an approved human trafficking prevention training course in order to renew their license. It is required every 2 years with your license renewal.

Continuing Education Requirements

Total Required: 12 hours per 2 year period.

Continuing education may be completed at any time during the licensure period, beginning immediately after the license is issued or renewed.

Your license will not be renewed until all continuing education requirements have been completed.

Approved Education Providers

Acceptable coursework for continuing education must be approved or offered by one of the following:

Acceptable Activities

Continuing education activities will be acceptable, if the experience falls into one or more of the following categories:

  • Academic or clinical courses related to dietetics

  • In-service educational programs, training programs, institutes, seminars, workshops and conferences in dietetics

  • Instructing or presenting continuing education programs or activities that were offered or approved by the Commission on Dietetic Registration or its agents -- multiple presentations of the same programs will count only once

  • Acceptance and participation in poster sessions offered by a nationally recognized professional organization in the dietetics field or its state equivalent organization

  • Publishing of books or articles by the licensee in relevant professional books and referred journals

  • Self-study of professional materials that include self-assessment examinations

Unacceptable Activities

The department will not grant continuing education credit for the following activities:

  • Education incidental to the regular professional activities of a licensee such as learning occurring from experience or research

  • Professional organization activity such as serving on committees or councils or as an officer

  • Activities described under the acceptable activities section (above), which have been completed more than once during the continuing education period

  • Performance of duties that are routine job duties or requirements

  • Participation in conference exhibits

1 continuing education hour for 6 poster sessions, with a maximum of 2 continuing education hours for 12 poster sessions

3 continuing education hours (minimum) for each publication

Self-study of professional materials

6 continuing education hours maximum

Audit Process

You are responsible for keeping a record of all acceptable continuing education activities completed, and providing it to TDLR if selected for audit. Licensees are required to keep a copy of the continuing education certificate for two years after the date of course completion.

The Department will randomly select a sample of license renewals for audit each month. If selected for an audit, you will be notified 90 days prior to your license expiration. You will then be required to submit copies of certificates, transcripts or other documentation to verify your attendance, participation and completion of continuing education requirements.

Renewal Application and Fee

To renew an existing license, submit a completed renewal application along with a $90 renewal fee.

Expired Licenses

A person whose license has expired may not use the title or represent or imply that he or she has the title of "licensed dietitian" or use the letters "LD", and may not use any facsimile of those titles in any manner.

A late renewal, if available, means the license holder will have an unlicensed period from the expiration date of the expired license to the issuance date of the renewed license. During the unlicensed period, a person may not perform any act that requires a license.

A person paying a late renewal fee is not required to pay the renewal fee in addition to the late renewal fee.
